Swim Meet Basics
Summer swim team is a fun and exciting time, but knowing certain items will make it less chaotic. Below are some basic guidelines for a swim meet.
- There are a total of 5 swim meets and county final per season, 2 at home and 3 away. Directions will be provided before any away meet via email and the app Remind.
- Home meets, arrive by 4:45, and away meets arrive at 5:00 so swimmers can warm up and parents can get organized for their volunteer role.
- Make sure you find our check in table to sign your swimmer in. You can write their events on the swimmers arm so they know when they are swimming with provided markers. Parents need to check what volunteer position they have and get the equipment/instructions you need for your role. Meets begin promptly at 6 pm - please be on time for your shift! Parents mostly work either first or second shift and each shift typically runs 90+ minutes, depending on the number of swimmers. Some official roles run the whole meet, such as the Starter and the computer entry folks.
- Young swimmers may be in bubble heats for the first few meets if they are not ready to compete; they occur either just before the National Anthem at some places. We do them right after the National Anthem just before the meet starts.
- For the first few meets the water is usually cold, please bring extra towels and change of clothes for your kids.
- We recommend bringing your own chairs, snacks (concessions will be available), and some games to keep kids busy during the times they will not be swimming.
- All swimmers must stay inside the pool fencing for safety unless there is a storm and everyone is instructed to leave the pool area. Once we have a weather warning, the meet will be stopped and there will be a 30 minute delay.
- Do not leave the meet without checking with coaches, as your child might be participating at a relay event later in the evening.
- Meets usually run until 10 pm or later, please schedule accordingly.
